About the Programme
The images that circulate globally play a powerful role in shaping how gender, power, and social realities are understood — influencing everything from public debate and cultural memory to research, advocacy, and policy.
Yet the communities, cultural contexts, and visual practices that should inform these narratives too often remain underrepresented in the images and institutions that influence them.
The Regional Curatorial Fellows Programme exists to help shift that.
For the first time, This is Gender is embedding regional curators directly within the heart of its global photography competition — bringing local knowledge, critical perspective, and lived context into how work is discovered, interpreted, contextualised, and shared.
This is an opportunity to help reshape the platform from within — influencing not only which images are seen, but how gender is framed, debated, and acted upon across cultural, public, and policy spaces.
Over six competition cycles, This is Gender has grown into an international platform for photography, visual storytelling, and public dialogue — receiving thousands of submissions from artists and practitioners worldwide, and bringing powerful image-based work into exhibitions, publications, major media platforms, and the research, advocacy, and policy spaces where gender justice is debated and advanced.
But if we want to challenge outdated, extractive, and colonial ways of representing gender globally, it is not enough to diversify who makes images.
We also have to consider who selects the images, who contextualises them, who writes about them, who commissions them, who circulates them, and who decides which stories are worthy of attention.
The Regional Curatorial Fellows Programme marks a major new chapter for TiG — championing the next generation of curators, editors, and cultural practitioners while building a platform that is more regionally rooted, more critically informed, and more connected to the communities whose stories shape the work.
What to Expect
As part of an international cohort, you will:
Work inside a global photography competition receiving thousands of submissions each year, gaining first-hand experience of how major platforms discover, review, and champion new work.
Shape key curatorial decisions by bringing regional knowledge, critical perspective, and cultural insight into the selection and interpretation of work.
Contribute to public-facing projects including exhibitions, editorial outputs, digital storytelling, and other curatorial initiatives, while developing your own writing, framing, and curatorial voice.
Learn from leading practitioners through direct engagement with international judges, curators, artists, editors, and cultural practitioners, gaining behind-the-scenes insight into high-level curatorial processes.
Grow your practice and network by building your curatorial voice and connecting with a global community of peers and practitioners.
Who should apply?
We welcome applications from curators, critics, writers, researchers, artistic directors, photographers, organisers, and cultural practitioners from global majority countries and historically underrepresented communities — including across Asia, Africa, Latin America, the Middle East, Oceania, and diasporic communities worldwide.
Early-career practitioners and recent graduates are strongly encouraged to apply.
You do not need to hold a formal curatorial title.
